Automotive

Energy efficiency and the reduction of vehicle emissions remains a priority for the automotive industry. To address these demands, CompoTech provides composite solutions to facilitate vehicle lightweighting and promote recyclability.

We collaborate with automotive manufacturers across the supply chain, ranging from large volume OEMs to lower volume, concept cars.

Mass Transportation

Composites are helping to promote the light weighting of vehicles for the mass transport of goods and passengers. In the drive for sustainability and lower emissions, the pay load capacity is vital to improve efficiency in logistics and public transport.

Composite drive shafts

CompoTech’s primary focus within the automotive industry is the development of composite drive shafts for the heavy commercial vehicle sector. Our high performance products enable significant structural and weight advantages over conventional steel and injection moulded designs.

Fibre type and orientation can be tailored to satisfy specific torsional stiffness and strength, as well as bending stiffness requirements. If the customer’s key requirement is stiffness, ultra-high modulus graphite fibre is routinely recommended.

The extra stiffness also ensures higher RPM, which in turn means longer drive shafts are achievable, therefore reducing the need for intermittent bearings. This ensures better corrosion resistance and longer fatigue life.

End connection is also a key consideration. This region of the structure is critical in transferring torque at the end of the shaft. CompoTech has experience in various connection methods and can advise on bonding, bolting and integrated ends for optimum torque transfer.

PalletX Case Study

Part of a wider sustainability initiative, this innovative project involving composites pallets was commissioned by a leading logistics company. The new carbon fibre epoxy composite pallets have been developed to replace existing, much heavier metal pallets in order to significantly reduce transportation costs and the carbon footprint of future deliveries.

The design of the pallets includes CompoTech’s proprietary axial fibre winding technology and integrated loop technology (ILT) for fixture free joints.
