Project name: A new generation of composite beams for high dynamic production machines (DynaBeam)

CompoTech will develop a new generation of composite beams for highly dynamic production machines. Characterised by an optimised internal structure designed in interaction with the control system of motion axes and the properties of drives. The project will also integrate sensors for real-time monitoring of the state of the composite structure with feedback information input to the machine control system. Coupling the structure’s mechanical properties with the drive control will allow the design of a composite body with the best properties without the excessive material used.

Beam sample version 2 contains an internal structure made using 3D printing from nylon filled with carbon fibres. For the design of this structure, Ansys software tools made 2D topological optimisation. From the results of this optimisation, the internal structure was subsequently designed and produced with an emphasis on the thinnest possible rib and, thus, the lowest possible weight. This structure was printed and used as a core (lost mandrel) to produce the square cross-section beam.
